Since I have no sage words of garden wisdom this week, here is just a few new products, look’it what we gots and this is what we’re up to.

New product from Landscapers Pride

Our favorite soil amendment is Black Humus. Landscapers Pride (New Waverly, Tx.) took their Black Humus and ran it through an even finer screen to produce Compost Peat. We saw it at a recent trade show and I couldn’t stop running my fingers through it. It’s fine texture is perfect for spreading on the lawn as a top dress, there won’t be any chunky bits to rake up. I’m also thinking that it might be the perfect thing to start seeds in, so we will give it a try to let you know how it works.  We have it in

Moving the Furniture

If you have been in the nursery in the past few weeks, you may have noticed that we have started “moving the furniture around”. Yeah, it’s about time too! The guys actually picked up the greenhouse, in 2 parts, and moved it. Honestly, when they said they were going to “pick it up and move it…I was sceptical.  It is 48 foot long and 30 foot wide! Even in 2 parts it’s huge. But, 5 men and a forklift had it moved in a couple of hours…I was impressed…as always. There are plenty of other changes we are making so stop in and see our progress.

Plant those veggie seeds

On 9/27 I planted radish, bok choy and Napa cabbage seeds, they are already up! The lettuce and spinach will be a few more days. I planted cilantro and green onion seeds on 9/30.  This Wednesday, I’ll plant carrots, leeks, head cabbage and  beans. Now, those are some of the veggies we like. (onion sets are just around the corner.) You can also plant; beets, broccoli, cauliflower, swiss chard, collards, garlic, kale, mustards, turnips, brussels sprouts, endive, horse-radish, kohlbabi, parsnips and  radiccio…to name a few. Renee’s Seeds https://www.reneesgarden.com/ is the company we carry and is the brand I use. They have a wide variety and a bunch of great mixed seed packs. We refer to Year Round Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers for Metro Houston by Bob Randall, Ph. D ($39.99)  for all our research on veggies (in fact it’s open on my desk as I type).

Just in…

We got a large shipment from one of our favorite growers. Included were Midnight Flare azalea (blood-red, shiny leaves, compact, blooms 2x year),  Jennifer azalea (similar to Fashion, red/orange, blooms more and has better foliage) and Southern Summer Rose azalea (HOT pink, seen blooming from August to April, compact). We also got in some Encore azaleas, a bunch of old standard azaleas, a few different gardenias, assorted nandinas and camellias.

 Pumpkins any one?
